A prayer meet for the late actress Zarine Khan, wife of actor Sanjay Khan, was held on Monday evening in Mumbai. Several Bollywood celebs arrived to pay their last respects to the veteran actress. However, a moment that left everyone concerned was when veteran Bollywood actor Jeetendra suffered a minor fall while attending the prayer meet. His son, Tusshar Kapoor, has now shared his health update.

The verb "attend" sounds odd to me here in the text above. I think "arrive" or "enter" should have been used, i.e. "while arriving to attend the prayer meet" or "while entering the venue to attend the prayer meet".

It's certainly true that the verb 'arriving' describes more precisely the exact time when the fall happened. Also, since he had just stepped out of the car a moment prior, the prepositions 'on/upon' and 'when' work better than 'while':

Jeetendra suffered a minor fall upon arriving at the prayer meet

Thanks, but you didn't comment on the use of "attend" in the given text. Can you please do?

By using the verb 'attending' the writer isn't picking out exactly when the fall happened. It just means he was there, in attendance at the prayer meet, at the time of the fall. Even though he had in fact just arrived when he fell, it still counts as happening while he was attending the meet.

'Attending' also puts more focus on the event than the time. It highlights the (somewhat ironic) fact that the fall happened at a prayer meeting (which attending was meant as a gesture of good will).

It's less important at exactly what point the injury happened during the event than it is to highlight the fact that while trying to do something kind or good he was himself injured.
