How do we divide the word 'swimming' into syllables? Is it swim-ming? (I know that the -ing ending is usually separated "in its own right", if I can say so. But it doesn't seem to work for 'swimming' because of the double consonant.)

It's swim + ing
The double "m" has no bearing on it. The reason the "m" is repeated is that "swiming" would be pronounced "swyming".

For what reason would you want to divide this word into syllables?

Are you asking about how to write the word down? Or how to pronounce it?

I need to write it down, when there is no space left on the line and I need to transfer a part of the word to the next line:
............................ swim-
ming. ..............................

I need it for situations when I have to write it down at the end of the line with little space left and move a part of the word to the next line.

Are there any general rules for moving syllables when you need to divide the word in writing at the end of the line?

Yes, there are rules but I'd advise you not to do it. Of course it's a good thing to try to save paper, but I think you should just go to the next line and start writing the word from the beginning.

In a post-typewriter world, we rarely bother with such niceties. I haven't divided a word this way since I bought my first computer.

A dictionary will show how syllables are divided.
