What is the exact meaning of "take out" in the folowing context:

"He took out an ad in New York Times blaming the child molestation crisis in hte church on homosexual priest in the church"

In BrE we would say "He put an ad(vertisement) in the NYT. For some reason Americans "take out" ads.;-)
