I have never heard of that before. However, in the dictionary it does list it as a possibility.

So apparently, in British English it is common to say: I am sitting my exam next week. However, I would say: to take an exam or maybe: to undergo an examination.

Yes, you can use sitting for academic exams, that's to say exams where you sit at a desk.

To clarify, for academic exams you can use 'sit'. I'm not sure whether for academic exams you can use 'sit for'. I wouldn't use it, but I may have heard it.

You stand throughout a flute exam. The only exception is (in some exams) when you sit at the piano for the aural section.
