Are the following sentences correct? What's the difference between 'than' and 'to' in this case? Does anything change?

e.g. I prefer English to Maths.
I prefer English than Maths.
 
Only the first sentence is grammatically correct.
 
Only with the verb prefer can the preposition 'to' work?
 
[STRIKE]Only with[/STRIKE] Can the verb "prefer" [STRIKE]can the[/STRIKE] only work with the preposition 'to'? [STRIKE]work?[/STRIKE]

If you read my reply and 5jj's reply again, what do you think the answer to your question is?
