Although either aspect is possible, I think I had a point in that a stative verb in the main clause attracts the perfect aspect in the because-clause:
If you sued a big company and won, you wouldn't have enough money to cover your expenses because you wouldn't have gotten much in damages.
In contrast, a non-stative verb in the main clause attracts the simple aspect in the because-clause:
If you injured your back like that, the boss would fire you because the quality of your work would fall off.
This conforms to your advice, @jutfrank, in posts #8 and #19.
