My university is called Volgograd Socio-Pedagogical University. (By the way, would you use an article before this name?) Let's imagine that David is a student at Volgograd Socio-Pedagogical University. And he is a member of the university basketball team. Would the following sentences be correct?

1) David plays on the Volgograd Socio-Pedagogical University basketball team.
2) David plays on the basketball team of Volgograd Socio-Pedagogical University.
:?:

The first is far more natural.

They both work equally well for me.

(Wow. There's a name that rolls right off the tongue. You couldn't keep it on your tongue if you tried! I'm trying to imagine how they work that name into the lyrics of the school song.....  )

They avoid using it in the song. :-D And I need to know if it's it better to use or not to use the article before it. :?:

It's not necessary to use the article.

Our school song didn't contain the name of our school. It was an already existing song which the school chose to adopt as the school song. Sadly, I can still remember every long, dull verse of it (bear in mind I haven't had to sing it since 1985!)
