Hi,

Let's say that two of my friends have a relationship and they want to give it a break. I don't want them to break up, I say: Come one! You can't split up because you are the best couple I know/have known.

Which one is OK - know or have known?

You still know them, so say 'I know'.

If they are dead or you have lost touch with them, say 'They were the best couple I have (ever) known.'
