Hi,

What does "the fruit yields to the touch" mean in this sentence?

Mangoes need to ripen at room temperature until the fruit yields to the touch.

Does it mean "until the fruit is edible"?

No, "yields to the touch" means that the fruit is somewhat soft when one gently pushes his fingers into the fruit.
In British English, this would have to be "...one gently pushes one's fingers ..."

But please don't squeeze the tomatoes. Sorry, but I think the heat here in the mid-east portion of the U.S. is getting to me.
