The goverment want / wnats

I tend to say "The govermment want",however, I've also seen "The govermment wants" is there any explanation here?
 
Americans treat government and most other mass nouns as singular. British English-speakers often treat them as plural.

Please note my corrections above. (Also note that you misspelled "government" and "wants" in your thread title.)

It depends on whether the speaker/writer considers "government" to be a single entity (singular) or to be all the different people who make it up (plural). It's one of the usages that differs between variants of English.
