The Hawaiian alphabet, introduced by missionaries in the 1820's consist of five vowels and only seven consonants.


shouldn't we use consists instead of consist here? Because alphabet is a countable noun!

Yes, because "alphabet" is singular.
 
I'd put a comma after 1820s.
