Haqqi died in 1992, but is still thought of as the father of the modern short story and the novel in Egypt.

What is the meaning of "thought of as" in the previous sentence?

People/Experts/Readers/Critics (or any other suitable subject) still think of Haqqi, who died in 1992, as the father of the modern short story and the novel in Egypt.

...and see here. (Please scroll down to "think of somebody/something as somebody/something")
