The more..., the more... With adjectives at the end

1) The more he studied, the more intellectual he got.
2) The more he studied, the more he got intellectual

Sentence 1, I think, is grammatically correct and standard.
But is sentence 2 grammatically correct?
I followed "the more <subject><verb>" structure mentioned Here.
 
Sentence 1 uses the correct word order. Sentence 2 doesn't work. I'd note too that people don't really become intellectual. You can improve your knowledge and, at a push, your intelligence but I don't think "intellectual" was really the word you were looking for.
 
"Intellectual" does work to some extent. I suppose the more you study, the more you might hone your intellect or be prone to using it over your emotions. Still, I agree it's not the best choice.
