Is there any mistake in my following sentence. Please guide.

The nearer he was approaching the age of superannuation, the more he was falling into depression.

(You don't need following.)

The nearer he was approaching the age of superannuation, the more he was falling into depression.

Perhaps:

The older he got the more depressed he got.

I wouldn't use such "fancy" words. Nor would I use so many words. (I'm a simple man.)

Re: Sentence construction

Tarheel, I could not reflect my thoughts in this sentence. I used the word "superannuation" to mean "age of his retirement" which meant that now he had to get by on mere pension. It made him depressed.

You used the word correctly. After looking it up in Dictionary.com I realize that I misinterpreted it.

I would say he was nearing the age of retirement. Thinking about that made him depressed because he was going to have to live on a pension.

Hopefully, he will develop a plan to deal with the situation.

Re: superannuation

I hope so too.
