[Grammar] The part which looks to the north is lower than it/that which looks to the south.

"The part which looks to the north is lower than it/that which looks to the south."


The above sentence is from a National Exam for Korean highschoolers and the answer is 'that'.

I wonder why 'it' can't be a precedent for the relative pronoun 'which' and why 'lt' can't be used for 'the part' in this

sentence.

'That' can be understood in your sentence to mean 'the one', i.e. the part. 'It' would refer back to 'the part which looks to the north'; that would make no sense.
