The pupil claimed, "I was in the canteen when the incident happened."

The above sentence is reported as follows:

The pupil claimed that he had been in the canteen when the incident happened / had happened.

Should I use the verb 'happened' or 'had happened'?

The pupil claimed that he had been in the canteen when the incident happened [STRIKE]/ had happened[/STRIKE].
