[Grammar] The ship is on the sea/ in the sea?

I am confused wether to use the first or the second statement. I would appreciate somebody's help. Thanks in advance :)

The ship is at sea or on the sea, but it could be in the Black Sea, the Mediterranean (Sea), etc.
 
It could be in the sea if it sank.
