Please tell me what this means to you?

"Tropical Cyclones Larry and Wati forced USS Reuben James and USS Port Royal to extend their track to the northeast to avoid the storm. The ships experienced several days of rough seas but managed to avoid the most dangerous parts of the storm."

Does this mean the ship avoided danger altogether. The word most is confusing me.

It does not mean the ships avoided all danger. By continuing on their north-easterly track they avoided the worst of the stormy weather.

As an aside, @jmess719, I've always thought (based on the old song) that the Reuben James sank with the loss of all hands.
