The structure of an essay

The "controlling idea" is a term used by some when explaining the mechanics of a topic sentence. It (the controlling idea) is the main part of the topic sentence, in that it outlines the theme of that sentence (and of the rest of that paragraph).
Could you recommend a textbook on writing essays? I would really appreciate it. It would be great to follow instructons and read sample essays.
 
I'm afraid I can't. I think the best thing for you to do would be to practise writing actual essays on various topics.
