This sentence is from my essay:

"The town centre has changed into a more residential area with better transport infrastructure and fewer green areas."

1) Is it correct to refer to any area covered with grass or trees as green areas?
2) Can I also say "green space"?
3) Is "green space" a countable noun, that is, can I say "green spaces"?

1) As long as it has a function as a green area. A solitary tree with a bit of grass in a road junction wouldn't qualify for me.

I agree. For something to be considered a green area or a green space, it has to be suitable for use by people doing leisure activities (walking, football, playing with the kids etc).

The town centre has changed into a more residential area with better transport infrastructure and fewer green areas.
How about:

The town centre has become more residential, with better transport infrastructure and less green areas.

I don't know what's wrong with fewer green areas. I think it's perfectly good.
