Which sentence is correct?

The wings of the mosquitoes are different from those of other insects in that there are scales on the veins of them.

The wings of the mosquitoes are different from those of other insects by the presence of scales on the veins of them.
If neither of them is correct, I would like to know why. Thanks.

I would use the first one but omit "of them" there.
 
I would delete 'the' before 'mosquitos' (the alternative spelling which I prefer).
