kfredson is right. ‘There’ can be used as an adverb as well as a pronoun. Here it is used as pronoun to introduce a sentence in which the verb comes before its subject which is not mentioned. So the verb must agree with its subject, it can be singular or plural according to the number of the subject that follows the verb:as
There is a message for you.
There is no message for you
There are many patients in the waiting room.
There are no patients in the waiting room.
