Hello, I was chatting online and I saw someone write the following sentence:

"There are more than one African language"

I would like to know if the above sentence is grammatically correct or it should be "There is more than one African language" instead.
Also, is "there are more languages than one" grammatically correct? Or should it be "is" here too? If it's indeed "is", it's because "one" always forces a singular verb, right?

Thank you for your time.

There clearly is more than one African language. In fact, there are several.

Thank you for your time.

You're welcome.

I apologize, I think I might have phrased it badly. By "correct" I meant "grammatically correct".

You were supposed to pay attention to the way I phrased the sentence.
:)

I see. That's actually the first thing I did haha :-D. But then I saw that you didn't answer my other two questions so I thought you had misinterpreted my post.

Oh.

There are more languages than one.

Or:

There is more than one language.

Take your pick.

There are in this context sounds odd to me.
