Hello.
Which form is correct in the examples below?
Do we say
1. "There is a ton of people in the street.
2."There are a ton of people in the street"?
I'll appreciate your help.
 
Only 2 is grammatically correct, but you'll often hear or see 1. I'm slightly ashamed to admit that I often use "there is" when I should use "there are".
