Hello everyone,

From the book Friends forever:

Co-creator David Crane adds, “Certainly, there was growth in the first season. There was discovery. I would say there was a point in the first Thanksgiving show where we saw how Monica could be really funny. Not just caring and supportive, but actually funny. We knew what to write then after that.”

I looked "discovery" up

https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/discovery

1 [countable, uncountable] an act or the process of finding somebody/something, or learning about something that was not known about before
2
[countable] a thing, fact or person that is found or learned about for the first time

but I have to admit I'm not sure what "discovery" means in the context above.
My guess is that it implies that the authors learnt some new things about the series while writing and whatchig the resulting episodes.
Is it correct?

Thank you.

Look at the sentence directly after "There was discovery".

Well, the sentence is, "I would say there was a point in the first Thanksgiving show where we saw how Monica could be really funny", which makes me think that my initial guess is more or less correct.

Trust your guesses; it's what native speakers do.

In the case of that sentence, I would say that definitions 1 and 2 fit. Definition 2 mentions people so I veer towards that one. In that episode, they discovered that Monica could be really funny. However, an argument could be made for saying the discovered the fact that Monica could be really funny.
