I am writing a text about a grey suburb where the majority of inhabitants are immigrants and refugees. I am not sure about the following two sentences. Is the verb "assign" the right word in my second sentence. I could not remember any better word, but I am trying to say that the refugees have not chosen the place to live, but they had been sent there by authorities.
The children and their parents had not chosen this place. They had been assigned there by the authorities.
