This magic device can take/send you back in time.

I know that take is probably wrong, because it means that the device goes back in time with you, which is not the case here. On the other hand, as I have seen in dictionaries, send is used when one is assigned something to do where they go, which is not the case here either.

I have also thought of another way to word it, but I have a feeling it's not natural...

When one uses this magic device, they go back in time.

Any help?

If the device doesn't go with them don't they have to stay in whatever time period it is?

Send works. Doctor Who's Tardis, which goes back with the Doctor takes her/him back in time- the Doctor can come back.
