Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

The base parsimony of his uncle had thrown many obstacles in the way of his education….

throw obstacles in the way = stand in the way

throw obstacles at sb
throw obstacles before sb

Do they differ much?
