Open the door/way to something : (also open doors) to make an opportunity for something to happen.

Above is the definition of "open the door" in Longman Dictionary:
http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/open-the-door-way-to-something

Shouldn't the underlined part be like this?

To make an opportunity for something happen.
(Make something DO something)

No - it's fine as is.

That is incorrect.

Could you please tell me why? It is so confusing. For years, I have learned that we don't use "to-infinitive" after make. Now, it seems to be a new rule.

The infinitive is not used after 'make'. It is used after 'an opportunity (for something)'
Thanks teacher. Now I got it. In this case, the infinitive is related to "opportunity for something to do something", and it is not related to "make".
