NOT A TEACHER.

There's no difference in meaning. "Toward" is preferred over "towards" in American English, but only in formal contexts. In my experience, "towards" is more common in day-to-day English. In England, on the other hand, "toward" is not used -- so I've been told.

Toward is rare in BrE.
 
Strunk and White prefer "toward."
