Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

Sam turns to the wings, his hand out to welcome the visitors

turn to the wings = wait in the wings = be ready, be at one’s disposal

I have never heard the expression "turn to the wings"; "wait(ing) in the wings" has its origin in the theater but can be/is used also as in your definition, to be ready or at one's disposal.
