Dear all,

What is the meaning of "up" in:

A: How is George?
B: Don't ask. I have been up half the night.

That was asked by a woman worker to her colleague when the latter came late to work.

I think "George" is her husband.

Thanks a lot.

Awake. Out of bed. Not in bed. Not asleep.

The baby kept me up half the night.
There was a party in the next flat and it kept me up most of the night.

I assume George is either her son or her husband and he is ill. She has been awake half the night looking after him.

As simple as that!

Yes! Sometimes things are as simple as that. Sometimes they're not. That's what makes language fascinating and infuriating!
