If I said the following :
Mary want's/wants to meet new people.

Would it be incorrect? A friend of mine said that "wants" isn't a possessive so it was used incorrectly .

I do wonder why ever you should bring a possessive? "...Mary wants to meet new people..." sounds right as far as the context means so.
 
I"m at a loss to understand what your friend means.

As Mehrgan says, the correct word is "wants."
