B: We can say much the same of Jack.

Does the second sentence make sense in this context?
 
You could delete much to make Jack sound as industrious as Tom.
 
i don't see that.
The first speaker wants to talk about Tom. The second one wants to talk about Jack. (One possible interpretation.)
