ages is an informal way of saying a long time

If two people "go back ages", it means they've known each other for a long time.
Similarly, "go back a long time".

Ages can also be used in phrases like "it's been ages" (it has been a long time), "haven't seen you for ages" (haven't seen you in a long time).

ex. It's been ages since I had a really good slice of cheese.

So, go back means to know each other? What a surprise! Haven't found anything about it in my dictionary (I use Lingvo x3). Would you please throw some link with the explanation to me?

Good point.

Thank you.
