[Grammar] We played in/on the sea

Dear friends: Is it correct to say: "We ate ice cream and played in the sea." Or we need to use "on"? Thanks! :)
 
Welcome to the forums, Giselleternal. You most likely played in the sea, unless you were on a boat.
