Would you please explain the meaning of "signature" used here:

Yes, I have referred to a dictionary but your explanations would be better. I think that this is a non-standard use of "signature". Would "sign" or "signal" be much better?

A 'signature' is a sign that can be identified with a specific entity.

In this case, the signature will be some kind of radio (or other) signal that can be inferred to originate from intelligent life.

When you sign your name, your signature identifies you as an individual person.
