Please tell me the meaning of this sentence.

"My friend is in a real bad place, just on some shit."

Maybe it's simple, but I don't understand the exact meaning.
Dose the word "place" mean literally a "place"?
Or any kind of circumstance or situation?

Could mean rehab or prison (or mental asylum). Most likely a drug rehabilitation center.

The phrase is often used metaphorically, meaning that he is mentally going through a very bad time caused by drug abuse (some shit).

Thank you for your replys.
I understand that it's related with something about drug.
Both of Your replys are really helpful.:-D

When we say that someone is "in a bad place," we are almost always speaking metaphorically, where "place" is "situation." If a person is "on" something, that generally means the person is under the influence of a controlled substance (a drug.) Combine that with the fact that drugs are often referred to as "shit," and I would say the drug interpretation is probably correct!
