"My friend is in a real bad place, just on some shit."

Maybe it's simple, but I don't understand the exact meaning.
Dose the word "place" mean literally a "place"?
Or any kind of circumstance or situation?

If a person is "on" something, that generally means the person is under the influence of a controlled substance (a drug.) Combine that with the fact that drugs are often referred to as "shit," and I would say the drug interpretation is probably correct!
