The procession of rambunctious and feckless Celts through Ford's films, Irish and otherwise, was meant to cock a snoot at WASP or 'lace-curtain Irish' ideas of respectability.

what does it mean?
Thank you. :)

You'll find definitions of all these words and phrases, including 'cock a snoot' and 'lace-curtain Irish' here: OneLook: General dictionary sites

Ford is, of course, the director John Ford, a man very proud of his Irish background.

Boy, that sentence is a mouthful. I have no idea what it means :) Then again, I'm a yank ;-)

You mean it's even not very easy to understand for native users?

Some native speakers would not be familar with the words I have underlined, and not everybody would know those I have italicised.

I'm more used to hearing cock a snook, but both versions are acceptable.
