Dear Teachers,
Here is a sentence:
A mother is devastated, she is howling with pain, yelling all she can in that dark and dingy corner of her four by four kholi. There was nobody to hear her yell and not a soul to pacify her, because outside her shack is a long winding lonely road.
I do not know meaning of 'kholi'. Help explain it, please. Thanks.

From the context, I assume it means the same as 'shack' in the next sentence, but it's not not a word I have seen and it's not in my dictionaries. Which country is this text set in?

The two names used in the short story (Radha and Aryan) are both Indian names of Hindu origin.

I couldn't find the word listed online either, though there are plenty of listings for kohli instead!

Is it four by four with dingy corners?

The closest I got searching for 'kholi' and 'India' was the Koli community:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolis

There's also a 'koli dress' worn by women in the community, and I suppose if it's a big wrap-around dress, 4' by 4' and, er ... Nah, falls apart on that dark and dingy corner. Oh well, I tried!

खोली (kholi) means 'opened' in Hindi.
Maybe it's a one of those three-walled shops.
Anyhow, I'm sure one of our Indian friends could help.

 Because Indian consonant systems are so rich in comparison with ours, H is often used in transliterations - often inconsistently. I recently came across a paragraph in which 'Ghandi', 'Gandhi', and 'Ghandhi' all appeared within a few lines - and this was in a coursebook for an Open University course about language (a pretty literate typo!)

Someone'll know - we just have to wait...

Last night, I read this post of Subhash Kumar by Google:

Kholi literally means a room in Marathi. Usually, kholi is also used to represent an "apartment" in a chaaL/chawl.

e.g. I have a kholi on the second floor of this chaaL.

There is also this word: ‘like a deal soul in a living, rather breathing body’ in that article Another man's folly. But I don’t kown the meaning of a deal soul, especilly ‘deal’. Please explain it, thanks.

It looks to me like a typo for 'dead'. The image is rather telling for someone with a Christian culture, as that culture sees the soul as the living 'bit' left when the body dies - dead soul/living body is paradoxical.

Kholi is a Marathi or Hindi Word for one room.
Thank Mindovermatter very much for your kind & truthful explanation for kholi because your Native Language is Marathi.
