In some contexts they're interchangeable. In others they're not.

"The temperatures averaged 12.2 degrees. On one day it reached 20 degrees, but this was an extreme value." (Not intense) In statistics, an extreme value is an outlier, a value a long way from the mean.

"He looked intensely into her eyes." (Not extremely)
"He likes to live on the extreme edge." (Not intense)

You might be able to think of more examples.
