I haven't met and chatted with Thomas for a long time. During that period, he was admitted to a university and now he's teaching there. I'm going to meet him tomorrow. I want to know what kind of student he's teaching. He might teach freshman or sophomore or something but I'm not sure. Is it natural to ask him "What level students do you teach?"

What does "he was admitted to a university" mean? University admission usually refers to the students but you said he's teaching there. My first thought when I saw "During that period, he was admitted to a ..." was that the next word was going to be something like "psychiatric hospital"!
I can't answer your question because I'm not familiar with the terminology at American universities (where "freshman" and "sophomore" are used).

Sorry, I misused the word "admitted". I was trying to say that "he then taught in a university".

I used "freshman" to mean "first-year students at the university" and sophomore for the second year.

I wonder if there's a way to ask him the kind of student he's teaching.

I would ask what classes he is teaching. There may be students of different levels in any class.
