I divided tonight’s kids English club (six people) into two groups. They each picked a name for their team. Then we moved the role play session and asked these two teams to perform. I said:

What team is first?

The intended meaning is: what team of you want to act first?

Please help me with a natural version.

I divided the six kids at tonight’s kids English club (six people) into two groups teams. They each picked a name for their team. Then we moved on to the role-play session and asked these two teams to perform. I said:

What team is first? Who wants to go first?
Which team wants to go first?

The intended meaning is no colon here "What team of you wants to act first?" Please help me with a natural version.
See above.

I'm not terribly bothered by the original 'Which team is first?, although I'd probably start with "Okay, which team is first?"

My issue with "... is first" is that it suggests that the decision has already been made. One of the teams must already know they're to go first. I thought the OP was asking the question for the first time and asking for a team to volunteer to go first.
