When did the place become a Chinese club?

I went to an English club last night and the people there were chatting in Chinese. I used to be there very often and it was definitely an English Club. So I asked the people there the above question. Is it natural?

I would be inclined to say "this place" rather than "the place".

Or even just 'this' if one wanted to refer to the club versus the location.
