Hello everyone,

From the preface to the book Psychology of Hope by Charles Snyder.

The period in which I have written this book has been the most difficult one in my life. Ironically, I have experienced more physical pain and uncertainty than in all the other previous years put together. After three surgeries, many hospital stays, and so many medical tests and procedures that I have lost count, I have needed all the hope I could muster. When I would come out of one of these adventures, however, there usually was someone special looking at me. Her name is Rebecca Lee, my wife. This amazing person has taught me more about love, hope, and relationships than I can possibly tell.

What does the phrase "When I would come out of one of these adventures" imply? When I would come out of the hospital (and would find myself at home) or when I regained consciousness in the hospital?

It refers to the whole process. The 'adventure' of my latest mishap would stretch from the fall in Bergen, through the ambulance ride to the local hospital, the night in the hospital having treatment for the pain. and brain scans (I not only broke my arm but also smashed my head on the frozen ground), the painful return flights and taxis home, and the weekly visits to the local polyclinic for X-rays, and the later visits for rehabilitation. My arm has finally been unstrapped from my body, but I won't think of the 'adventure' as ended until I can safely start cooking again.
