I want to say someone moves their eyes. Can I use "direct gaze"? Is this okay?

Jack was busy typing. Sara walked inside the room. "Hello," she said.
"Hi," he answered, his gaze still fixed on his laptop.
She took a seat opposite him. "Danny has come back."
He directed his gaze from his laptop to her. "Are you serious?"

What are some other ways I can express the idea?

I would use "shifted" instead of "directed" in that.
