Which of the following would be the correct use:

1. "Attached is the Check Register, Balance by Benefit Report, and Authorization for the Release of Checks."

2. "Attached are the Check Register, Balance by Benefit Report, and Authorization for the Release of Checks."

2. is definitely correct

1. is more debatable. You might hear it in informal speech but it's less acceptable in writing. However, where 2 or more singular subjects together make a plural (as here) and the subjects are far apart, then a singular might sound more natural because the plural subject is not apparent to the reader, so:

'Attached is the Check Register, which lists all those items concerned as well as ...., the Balance by Benefit Report, ...'

Compare 'there is/there are' - would you say:

'There's still an orange and banana in the fruit bowl.'

or

'There are still an orange and banana in the fruit bowl.'?

and would you write:

'There is still an orange and a banana in the fruit bowl.'

or

There are still an orange and a banana in the fruit bowl.'?
