When to use 'to' and 'for'

Hi,

I do not really understand when to use 'to' or 'for' in a sentence. Let say, should it be: “we need to create a record to maintain some information.” or “we need to create a record for maintaining some information.” ?? And why????

Two example sentences are shown below:

First, the customer service representative needed to create an identify record to maintain demographic data of the customer. Second ......

or we should write like this:

First, the customer service representative needed to create an identify record for maintaining demographic data of the customer. Second ......

In this case, you could use either.
You might like to search for some of the many threads that deal with this gerund "verbing" vs infinitive "to verb" problem. Search under "-ing".
