whereas and comma

Hi,:)

Example: Although Beth was poor, she was somehow able to manage, whereas her friend, unfortunately, could not.

I know the construction is fine, but what about the commas? There should be one before whereas, but I also thought there should be one before unfortunately because it is an adverb right in the middle.

Am I right?

I agree with you about unfortunately, though I am not entirely sure what you mean by 'adverb right in the middle':
Unfortunately, (at the start)
,unfortunately, (in the middle)
,unfortunately. (at the end
