Hello there ,

Which one do we use ? And why ??

1. A rise in the temperature of the Earth ..

or

2. A rise of the temperature of the earth...

In.

That's the preposition we normally use.

Right. A rise 'in' a measured quantity, e.g. temperature, water level, precipitation.... The rise 'of' a military or political force, e.g. Reaganism, Thatcherism, Gaullism, etc.

I should have thought of that.. My excuse is that I was concentrating on the sentence in the original question.

Thanks for the reply ..... Now it is clear ....

Yes, but "A rise in temperature of three degrees ..."; "A rise of three degrees in temperature..."
"An increase in height of 2 feet ..."
